IFSEL Toolbox I: Foundational SEL Tools
Path for 1-5 Grade Teachers
We explore the capacity and motivation of children to learn and apply social and emotional learning skills to their daily lives. This experiential session will describe a lesson sequence to help your school get started with SEL.
You will explore the use of creative metaphor and analytic thinking to activate the hearts and minds of elementary-aged children in pursuit of their first tools for SEL. These tools will include elements of self regulation and conflict resolution. This workshop can be adapted for teachers introducing foundational SEL tools for older students, as well.
SEL Insights for Subject Area Teaching, Homeroom and Advisory
Path for 6-12 Grade Teachers
SEL brings a wide and creative lens to view subject area teaching, Advisory or homeroom. This session offers the opportunity to consider design ideas—goals, role of the homeroom and Advisory, timing and grouping—to strengthen the classroom with intention and focus.
Attendees will engage in a series of experiences that activate personal reflection, meaningful conversations, rituals, and positive group interactions among students. We also explore ways to make Advisory/homeroom a place where students have opportunities for leadership, collaboration, compassion, and stress management.
