Nurturing a Whole Community Approach to SEL

Five-Session Online Course Starting June 14th, or August 2nd

This creative and experiential online course offers educators, administrators, counselors and advisors the opportunity to learn how to build classroom practices and school-wide systems that nurture the social and emotional health of all members of the community. Schools that intentionally activate SEL across the community in this way, see wide-ranging benefits for emotional and mental health, a growth in the sense of belonging and community, and positive shifts in mindset, engagement and learning. This course is designed to be highly practical, theory and evidence-led, and provide space for professional and personal renewal.

Outcomes of Course

  • Explore the ‘what, why and how’ of IFSEL’s Whole-Community Framework for SEL
  • Provide insights into effective practices and structures for implementing SEL in lower schools and through middle and high school advisory/mentoring programs.
  • Experience age-differentiated activities that will deepen and promote inter- and intra-personal development K-12.
  • Explore practices that activate SEL throughout the curriculum, in content areas, and throughout school-wide systems.
  • Provide opportunities for personal and professional renewal and reflection.

Opening the Space for SEL

This session will offer a collaborative and engaging experience designed to open the space for SEL. This will be followed by an interactive presentation to introduce the what, why, and how of IFSEL’s Whole Community Framework.

Session Two

It starts with Us: Focus on Teacher SELf-Care
1:00 - 4:00pm Pacific

Our second session will focus on the critical importance of teacher self- and communal-care. We’ll explore the personal and professional factors that influence our sense of alignment with our best Teacher SELf, and offer a range of strategies that can nurture and sustain it. We will uncover the values that motivate us, and become clearer about our true power to create community and support each other.

Foundational Tools for SEL

Our third session begins with a deep-dive into the practice of Check-In - a profound and simple tool for children and adults to bring balance and emotional health into their daily lives. The group will then split into two sessions:

Toolbox for the Elementary Grades (Grades K-6)

This session introduces an effective lesson sequence of foundational SEL skills and tools that empower young learners to develop self- and social-awareness and engage in deep and meaningful education.


Nurturing an SEL Rooted-Advisory Program (Grades 5-12)

This session introduces IFSEL’s Principles for a Thriving Advisory Program, and shares some low-prep, high-impact experiences that can activate SEL and engage our adolescent learners.

CEU Information


Participants in IFSEL Events are eligible for CEU Credits from Dominican University. Participants completing One-Day Workshops are eligible for 0.5 of a credit, Two-Day Workshop Participants receive 1 credit and Four-Day Institute Participants receive 2 credits.

If you are interested in applying, please request the application at the event registration desk. The application and fees are sent directly to Dominican University which administers the process. At this time, IFSEL is not able to provide credits for clinical counseling. Please note that Dominican University charges a fee of $55 per CEU unit.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

Registration fees will be refunded at 50% of the registration ticket price paid, less the $50 refund processing cost, if requested in writing more than two-weeks prior to the start of the course.  

From two weeks prior to the start of the course until the day before the course begins, refunds requested in writing will be granted a credit for the full value of their registration ticket price. 

No refunds or credits are available on or after the start date of the course.
