I work with early years, will I get something out of the Institute?
The Institutes are designed for K-12th grade educators and sessions are offered that meet both age-specific SEL outcomes, as well as K-12 themes. That said, many early years specialists have attended Institutes over the years and have found the experience impactful, and personally and professionally renewing. You can see our Institute Schedule for more information.

How do I know which sessions to choose and when do I select them?
A sample schedule can be found here. The final schedule will be published 6 weeks before the Institutes begin. All sessions have a recommended Grade level indicator on the schedule. There are multiple paths that are options, but no fixed ‘tracks’. You’re welcome to pick any session in which you are interested.

We will email participants one month in advance to ask them to select their session choices.

If I have done an IFSEL online training, will I get something out of an in-person summer Institute? Our in-person Institutes offer comprehensive, experiential, intentionally-designed SEL professional development. The depth and richness of the overall experience is different from our shorter online Workshops. Some elements of our online Workshops are included in the Institute content, but there are always other sessions to choose from at those times.
The most notable benefit of attending the Institute is the element of personal and professional renewal and the ongoing interactions with other educators.

A sample schedule can be found here.

I am a parent can I come to the institute?
IFELS’s Summer Institutes are designed for educators and administrators.  Many of our sessions focus on classroom implementation of SEL practices. For parents, we recommend our ***Parent and Caregiver Support***

I am an educational consultant, can I come?
Consultants are welcome to join one of our Summer Institutes.  However, consultants, as well as all attendees must comply with our Materials Use Policy.

We would like to provide this training for our entity faculty, do you have options for private sessions?
Yes, IFSEL provides SEL Professional Development for schools, districts, and other organizations. More information on IFSEL’s consulting, online, and in-person training can be found here.

Opening a Space for SEL

An opening experience designed to prioritize connection, and to ground ourselves in the goals of this weekend workshop

Foundations (choose one session):

Foundational SEL Practices for the Elementary Grades
This workshop introduces the foundational SEL tools for students. The core IFSEL sequence of lessons is presented to meet the developmental needs of elementary-aged children. The IFSEL “toolbox” also provides language and skills to address common classroom and group issues. You will experience activities that explore the capacity and motivation of children to apply social and emotional learning to their daily lives.
This session is also appropriate for teachers of older grades who want to learn and build upon basic SEL skills. The IFSEL “toolbox” content can be adapted for a variety of settings and ages, including parent groups.
Middle and High School Advisory - A Strong Space for Connections
We know that students are eager for adults to hold a purposeful, playful space that engages connection and brings respite within the challenges of the school day. SEL brings a wide and creative lens to view Advisory or homeroom meeting times. The session explores design ideas for Advisory (goals, role of the Advisor, timing and grouping). It also offers some experiences and rituals that engage meaningful conversations, personal reflection, and positive group interactions among students.
