Restorative practices, when deeply intertwined with Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), form a transformative framework for cultivating inclusive and empathetic school communities. These practices are not merely tools for conflict resolution; they embody a dynamic balance of proactive strategies to nurture belonging and responsive techniques to repair harm and rebuild trust.

At the Institute for Social and Emotional Learning (IFSEL), we recommend a restorative framework that emphasizes an 80:20 balance—80% focused on proactive community-building and SEL skill development and 20% dedicated to responsive, restorative practices.

Proactive Strategies: Building the Foundation for Belonging

Proactive strategies are essential for creating a school climate rooted in trust, empathy, and shared understanding. These strategies include:

  • Co-creating community agreements to establish shared norms and expectations.
  • Regular check-ins and rituals that foster a sense of belonging.
  • SEL skill-building in areas such as self-advocacy, reflective listening, perspective-taking, and cool-off techniques.

These proactive measures are the foundation of a restorative ecosystem. To sustain them, educators need ongoing, experiential, and reflective professional development to deepen their practice and commitment over time.

Responsive Tools: Prioritizing Understanding and Repair

When harm occurs, responsive restorative practices step in to prioritize accountability, understanding, and meaningful repair. Key tools include:

  • Student reflections and restorative conversations that promote self-awareness and empathy.
  • Peer mediation to resolve conflicts collaboratively.
  • A choice board of restorative practices, empowering educators to select tailored interventions based on their students’ unique needs.

In moments of conflict, techniques like reflective listening, emotion coaching, and calming exercises can effectively de-escalate tension. Following these moments, restorative circles or agreements can facilitate deeper healing and understanding.

A Shift Toward Dignity and Connection

Implementing this ecosystem requires a fundamental shift from traditional, punitive disciplinary models to ones centered on dignity, connection, and equity. Teachers and school leaders are at the heart of this transformation, serving as role models for SEL competencies such as empathy, self-awareness, and active listening. By fostering collaborative spaces, educators empower students to grow and thrive together.
